Part of a grand entry way to the facility, architects and designers came up with the idea of a grand hall shaped like an enormous caterpillar. The 200-foot-long by 85-foot wide by 60 foot high hall featured an undulating roof that was covered with more than 1,000 specially fabricated aluminum plates. These plates were supported by an interior skeleton comprised of more than 6,600 tubes, which were part of the interior design. The new expansion had so many echoes, resonances and reverberations when completed, serious acoustical attention was needed. International Cellulose Corporation’s Ure-K satisfied fire protection requirements of the New York state building code and produced an acceptable acoustical rating. Ure-K was applied to a 1 inch thickness over 15,000 square feet.
