Strong Museum in Rochester, New York (already home to the National Toy Hall of Fame® and the world’s most comprehensive collection of toys, dolls, and other play-related artifacts) has nearly doubled in size to 282,000 square feet and recently reopened. The $37 million expansion makes Strong the largest cultural attraction in Rochester, the largest regional year-round family attraction, and the second largest “children’s” museum in the nation.

Part of a grand entry way to the facility, architects and designers came up with the idea of a grand hall shaped like an enormous caterpillar. The 200-foot-long by 85-foot wide by 60 foot high hall featured an undulating roof that was covered with more than 1,000 specially fabricated aluminum plates. These plates were supported by an interior skeleton comprised of more than 6,600 tubes, which were part of the interior design.

The new expansion had so many echoes, resonances and reverberations when completed, serious acoustical attention was needed. International Cellulose Corporation’s Ure-K satisfied fire protection requirements of the New York state building code and produced an acceptable acoustical rating. Ure-K was applied to a 1 inch thickness over 15,000 square feet.

Ure-K is a thermal barrier approved as a building interior insulation to delay the ignition and reduce the surface burning rate of low melting, combustible rigid spray-on polyurethane foam in new construction projects as a combination system.
